7 Cool Facts About the Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Walk of Fame is one of the most recognizable attractions of Los Angeles, and certainly one of the most prized tourist attractions. More than 10 million people come to visit the Walk annually.

Quite a few new celebrities have been added to the Walk in 2018, and this drew in a large number of curious individuals. The Walk has quite an interesting history, and anyone intrigued in the history of Hollywood’s most famous attraction wouldn’t want to miss out on these 7 cool facts about the Walk of Fame.

1. The Walk Was Conceived 7 Years Before It Was Born

The idea for the Walk of Fame was initially proposed by E.M. Stuart in 1953. At the time, he was the volunteer president of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.

It was 3 years, however, until a proposal was submitted for construction, and it was another 4 years after that until construction actually started.

2. Construction Was Delayed Due to Lawsuits

In 1958, the public was given an initial sneak peek of the Walk. Constructed was slated to begin shortly after this, but there were two lawsuits that got in the way.

The first lawsuit was instigated by people who owned property nearby. The construction of the Walk meant that there would be a tax assessment of over $1 million, which the neighbors weren’t happy with.

The second lawsuit was started by Charlie Chaplin, who asked for $400,000 because he was upset that his father didn’t get nominated for the Walk.

3. The Walk Considers Mohammed Ali a Performance Artist

While two people punching each other in the head may not typically be seen in the same light as theatre or juggling, boxing has indeed been deemed a viable type of performance art. Since this distinction, Muhammed Ali has been awarded a star on the Walk of Fame. This was in 2002.

4. You Can Be Nominated After You Die

Death doesn’t have to mean that you can’t still find your place on the Walk of Fame. 1 out of the 24 stars which are awarded annually is given to a star who has passed on – as long as they’ve been dead for at least 5 years.

5. You Can Be Awarded Multiple Stars

As long as they’re in different categories, celebs can be awarded multiple stars. In fact, some celebrities, such as Roy Rogers and Tony Martin, have stars in 4 different categories! The only individual to hold a star in each of the 5 different categories is Gene Autry.

6. Not Every Nominee Is Real

There are more than 16 made-up characters who have stars on the Walk, most of whom are the stars of various animated television shows. Bugs Bunny, Woody Woodpecker, the Rugrats and Shrek are a few examples of fictional characters who have ‘earned’ stars on the Walk of Fame. Minnie Mouse was the most recent fictional celebrity awarded a star in 2018.

7. Some Stars Get Stolen

As of 2005, 4 stars have been stolen from the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The stars are generally replaced right away, though Gregory Peck’s was never recovered. The stolen stars of Jimmy Stewart and Kirk Douglas were found in the abode of one of the employees responsible for taking care of them.

The Locals Know the Best Spot to See the Hollywood Sign

It’s no secret Los Angeles is home to a number of popular sites and attractions. Finding time to see them all during one trip may not be possible. That’s why plenty flock to the area year after year, trying to enjoy all the experiences this city has to offer.

That said, many guests try to get a good look at the Hollywood sign during their first visit. This is an understandable impulse. It’s an iconic attraction. In the age of Instagram, it’s also become easier than ever to let family and friends know you checked this essential off your LA tourist to-do list.

Just keep in mind that different settings throughout the city offer different views of this landmark. If you want to know the best spot to see the Hollywood sign, consider the following options. They’re all suggestions from locals who know the city well enough to make truly informed recommendations.

The Best Spots to See the Hollywood Sign, According to LA Locals

Lake Hollywood Park

LA may be a big city, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy getting back in touch with nature while you’re here. There are simply numerous parks that offer unique opportunities to relax and get away from the hustle-and-bustle.

Lake Hollywood Park is one of them. This gorgeous park is ideal for playing with your kids, having a barbecue, or simply lounging on the grass to take in the beautiful LA sun. As the name implies, the park is also close enough to the Hollywood sign to offer a truly stunning view of this popular local attraction.

In fact, if you’re looking for a unique way to take a picture of the sign for social media, consider hiking up to the top of Mt. Lee via the Hollywood sign trail. By the time you reach the top, you’ll actually be behind the sign, giving you an interesting perspective not many people see. The Wonder View trail is another option to consider if this sounds appealing.

Griffith Observatory

The idea of hiking to get a good look at the Hollywood sign might not be as attractive to all guests as it is to some. Luckily, there is plenty of other ways to get a good look at this famous LA landmark. In fact, there are ways you can get a glimpse of the Hollywood sign while also visiting another famous area attraction.

If you’d prefer to rely on public transportation, you can take the DASH bus (or a taxi/Uber/Lyft) to Griffith Observatory. Featured in such popular movies as The Terminator, this is another spot guests often wish to see when visiting LA. The fact that it happens to offer a great view of the Hollywood Sign is an added bonus.

Bronson Canyon Entrance

If you’re the adventurous type, but would like to visit two popular sites at once (as with the previous example), you can begin hiking towards the sign via the Bronson Canyon entrance. It offers amenities such as a parking lot and bathrooms, making it a very convenient option for guests. Perhaps more importantly, along with providing a good view of the Hollywood sign, it also gives you the opportunity to check out Bronson Caves.

These are all options to keep in mind if you’re looking for the best spots to see the Hollywood sign. Of course, if you ever have any questions about getting around LA, we’ll be happy to provide additional recommendations as well.
